Tennessee River Camping
Welcome to Wheeler Lake KOA
Wheeler Reservoir operated by the Tenneesee Valley Authority is home to a myriad of recreational opportunities. Whether you like to water ski, canoe, sail, fish, swim, hike, photograph nature, picnic, birdwatch or camp, Wheeler Lake KOA at Mallard Creek is the perfect place to spend the day, night or the entire summer.
Wheeler Lake Campground, formerly known as the Mallard Creek Campground, was reopened in 2013 as a private campground. The campground is located directly on the banks of Joe Wheeler Lake and Mallard Creek, connecting to the Tennessee River. We offer full service RV sites, concrete boat ramp, and expansive day use facility with beach access.
Wheeler Lake Campground is located in the Mallard Creek Recreational Area near Decatur in North Central Alabama. To visit the campground and day park, travel west or east on Alt 72/20 to County Road 400 (watching for the yellow KOA sign or Mallard Creek Rec Area TVA sign). Our gated camp site area features approximately 56 RV and tent sites with electric and water hookups. A campground store and laundry facility is located at the entrance to the campground. For more information on overnight and long-term camping, visit our Accommodations page. For pictures of our different camp sites, visit the Photo Gallery.
Day Use Area
Just past the campground entrance, our Day Use Area begins with a large paved parking lot. On the lakefront, there is a children's playground with slides, climbing bars, and tire swing. Picnic tables with park-style charcoal grills are scattered underneath the shade trees, and a sandy beach is located at the edge of the swim area on the lake. Borrow from the campground store badminton and croquet equipment. For rental, we have novelty-type bikes, canoes and kayaks. Restroom facilities are located between the pavilion and the swim area. For your convenience, there is another paved parking lot beside the boat launch ramp.
Wheeler Lake KOA has a handi-cap accessible Group Pavilion that offers a large and several small charcoal grills, electrical outlets, and lots of seating space. This pavilion is also available to rent for private parties. Stop by the campground store to make inquiry.
