Tennessee River Camping
Open March 1 - November 30
WHEELER LAKE CAMPGROUND at Mallard Creek is the perfect place to spend the day, night or the entire summer, whether you like to water ski, kayak, sail, fish, swim, hike, photograph nature, picnic, birdwatch or camp. Our campground, located in the Mallard Creek Recreational Area near Decatur in North Central Alabama, is home to a myriad of recreational opportunities on Wheeler Reservoir.
Formerly known as Mallard Creek Campground, operated by Tennesee Valley Authority, we reopened in 2013 as a private campground. Our campground, a KOA Holiday, is located directly on the banks of Joe Wheeler Lake and Mallard Creek, connecting to the Tennessee River. We offer RV sites either on the water or with views of the water, deluxe cabins with premium water views, primitive tent sites along the lake, concrete boat ramp, and expansive day use facility with beach access. A campground store and laundry facility are located at the entrance to the campground.
Day Use Area
Just past the campground entrance, our Day Use Area begins with a large paved parking lot. On the lakefront, there are two children's playgrounds with slides, climbing bars, and tire swing. Picnic tables with park-style charcoal grills are scattered underneath the shade trees, and a sandy beach is located at the edge of the swim area on the lake. Borrow from the campground store horseshoes, bocce, badminton and croquet equipment. For rental, we have novelty-type bikes, canoes and kayaks. Restroom facilities are located between the pavilion and the swim area. For your convenience, there is another paved parking lot beside the boat launch ramp.
Wheeler Lake Campground has a handi-cap accessible Group Pavilion that offers a large and several small charcoal grills, electrical outlets, and lots of seating space. This pavilion is also available to rent for private parties. Stop by the campground store to make inquiry.
